This is what I tell everyone—even Christopher, my trash man, who is going through a bit of an existential crisis. (Aren’t we all?)

Imagine how good you’d be at a job you actually liked?

Most people don’t like really freaking hate their jobs. In fact, in America, it’s something like 50%. 🥴 Every friend I have is going through career menopause right now—what I call it when your aspirations dry up, and your youthful ambition does, too.

“I’m too old to start over” is one of the biggest ones I hear.

“I don’t have any passions” is the other.

And, isn’t that SO painful, feeling like a washed up piece of tumbleweed?

I’m lucky to have found my passion for writing when I was in my early 20s, because do you know what my passion could have been???? I could have become one of those people who roams around cemeteries taking pictures for www.findagrave.com. NOT THAT THAT WOULDN’T BE AN ABSOLUTE BLAST. But, there are some passions that can be turned into a career, and other passions that can only be turned into a creepy dating profile. (Like porcelain dolls. Who is still collecting these? The other day I went to a flea market looking for vintage artwork, and found a whole glass case of ‘em, staring me right in the schnozz. I think I would rather find a severed head in a toilet.) (Okay, wait, can we talk about the fact that that’s legitimately one of my biggest fears?!?! Every time I go into a rest stop off the highway, I am convinced I’m going to find one; that today’s going to be the day.)

(OH MY GOD, I just went looking for a funny video I have of me saying this from 2010 when me and two other bloggers went on a cross-country roadtrip…….but instead I found THIS PHOTO . What are the odds?!?!?!?!?!?! What is happening?!?!?!?! How is that even possible in my life right now?!?!?!)

Okay, let’s get back on track before Ash goes down the rabbit hole looking at her younger skin and cute millennial outfits and, oh yeah, that time in life when I could still wear dark hair without looking 1700 years old.

So, passion. No one’s got it. Everyone wants it. And this year, we’re going to explore it.

Every Monday this year, I’ll be sending out cool new creative job ideas that work in 2024—and outline exactly how I’d get started. Some will be crazy cool jobs no one knows exist (so fun!), and some will be creative cool ideas I’m coming up with that would work super well in the modern marketplace.
