Love this idea Ash!

I could totally see doing a subscription for product description writing, email copywriting (my favorite writing at this time) or heck even a landing page design service.

One page websites is something I actually enjoy creating for my broker clients which could translate to landing pages in our world.

I could even see doing a subscription for creating digital products. I’ve heard at least 2 people recently say they want to create digital products and have so many ideas but don’t want to actually create them. Well I happen to love creating them but hate the customer service!

🤣

So many ideas… which to choose… which to choose…

Your idea of digital product creation for other people is brilliant! I think it’s just so overwhelming for people especially if they’re fans of computers and everything that comes with it. Go with it!!

Omg, agree! Because it's not just the digital product *creation* - then it's the systems to deliver it, then it's the writing for it, then it's the emailing for it, then it's the advertising it, then it's the updating it, then it's the questions about it. Someone could 100% have an entire subscription business around "make me a digital product god."

I could also see product description writing for ecommerce companies being HUGE. Think of all the retailers / shops that regularly have new inventory coming through!

I mean to say “not fans of computers” but I was understood, thank goodness! Yes, I know from experience how hectic all of those other super important components can be! All of a sudden a small idea turns into a full time job 😳

yeah the choosing is hard, but as an outsider it is way easier ;) so I would say: start with what comes easiest for you and is most enjoyable. And then the next ...

Out of respect for Ash, I don’t want to post a link. But if you message me (can we even do that on Substack? 😜), I’ll send you the link to see some of my premade designs I made for brokers. (My niche for the past 10 years). 😽

Exzellent, as always. Subscriptions I pay for in Germany: * organic food box with fruits and vegetables,

* arts and craft supply box with ideas what to make

* Nougat (yes!) subscription with seasonal recipes.

* cheese subscription with recipes.

I think this is the most inspiring thing you've ever written, and that's saying a lot. Although I have a jewelry business, a novel to promote and two more to finish, I'm thinking about what else I can do!

That small time life must be setting your brain free.

Must be the country air!!!!! Baaaaahahahahaaaaaahahahahah!

I'd so have custom jewelry made on subscription, FYI. That sounds obnoxious, and yet - I WOULD SO DO IT. I always want funky, unusual rings, for example - but then I want a selection so I can switch them out on the regular!

Imagine if you had a biz that made custom jewelry for people, according to their preferences, and sent them a new piece every month?????????????

I WOULD DIE

Expand full comment

I love that idea!!! I've got tears in my eyes. Sadly I don't do rings, but I do some fun funky and sometimes chunky necklaces and bracelets and would love, love, love regular subscribers who like it too. I've been making much more subdued pieces lately - seems what most people want, but really love when I can go all out - I also pay attention to the gemstones and their ability to support the wearer. So could include both support for energetic, emotional, focus etc challenges as well as style, funk and color. The initial name of my company was Bold Bodacious Jewelry, then I changed it to focus more on the stone properties as GemstoneAlchemy. Maybe new name Bold BodaciousGemstoneAlchemy....but it's a bit long :>)

This is genius. But really looking forward to reading about the burnout bumpers. Ash, can you write a profile on providing annual retreats or monthly book clubs as a creative career idea? Would love to read how you would approach providing experiences such as retreats as a business model. Thank you!

Hmmm now my wheels are turning. My time spent just on invoicing random hourly amounts biweekly is an administrative nightmare 🤣 I'm a virtual assistant who needs a virtual assistant just for billing clients.

Coincidentally, one of my clients recently offered to pay me up front for ongoing support via email and suggested I set it up as an offering for others.

More of my services are one-offs than ongoing so it's difficult to conceptualize how this could work on a larger scale. But I already see a few ways I could implement a monthly subscription.

Baahaha, you can't conceptualize how a subscription for this could work, and I can't conceptualize how to have a virtual assistant *without* a subscription! 🤣 Isn't that funny?! Who is hiring you to do one-off projects for them? When I need an assistant, I need HELP ALL THE TIME, looolllllllll

I'm actually a Substack virtual assistant. Aside from weekly content management though, most of my work is one-off, such as branding packages, assorted graphics, CTAs, etc. I do this full-time and earn really good $$ but it's difficult coming up with subscriptions for one-offs. Here's my website if you want to see my "services" and tell me how to subscriptionize them 😁

Merci, thanks Ash for the inspiring ideas (actually it's more than ideas, more like a kickstart in the butt)

I am in health well-being. Acupuncture to be precise (one of my pursuits because I am severely multi-passioned with ADHD) And just yesterday I came across an idea to have a "package" of 3 follow up treatments.

Because I find it hard to make people come back. Mostly they come in thinking one treatment can fix their decade old issues. So I have to break the bad news that they will need to come in more often sometimes 2x a week would be best.

Some, mostly women take responsibility for their well-being and do come back. But a lot give up after one treatment. It’s cultural: in France my service is not paid by health insurance ( some complementary insurances do pay for 2 visits a year to an alternative healing session like chiropractic, acupuncture) So people in general see paying for health-care as a luxury they have to pay out of their pocket. They don’t flinch when they go to the hairdresser or to get their armpits waxed…

Not sure a yearly subscription could work because that implies they won’t get “better”. So I’ll start with the package of 3 sessions 130€ instead of 3x50€. I earn less but at least I have a chance of getting rid of their issue and they will spread the word of healing instead of “acupuncture is not working”.

I am also thinking of ways to provide a “digital” service. Maybe a planner-journal with all kind of prompts so they can track, document and go deeper into the emotional causes of their issues in the privacy of their home. Combined with Email sequence that gets them started and then the follow-up on new things I learn from the English health and self-care scene. Because the French miss out on tons of useful, easy and FUN ways that can empower them and make them feel better.

How does that sound?

Sorry for the long message ;)

Have a happy day!

OMG, I CAN'T BELIEVE I ACCIDENTALLY DISSED A HANDBAG DESIGNER IN LYON!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACESSSS!!!!!!! I shall forever be shamed!

Also, I have to tell you: my first instinct is that it would make *so* much sense to have your acupuncture on subscription. Soooooo much sense. I think anyone who has done their research knows that it's one of those things that requires consistency and commitment - I would personally love to have a subscription because it will mean I will be taking care of myself on autopilot, without me having to convince myself out of it. Twice a week might feel overwhelming to some people with hectic schedules just trying to remember to take the trash out on Tuesdays, but I could really see weekly or bi-weekly being easy - especially if you streamline the process as much as possible and get them in and out. I would have all paperwork done in advance online (or something), and then they just hop in, do the thang, and then get back to their life.

For a start, however, the 3-package is a definite. In other industries, I've seen it where you can't even buy a one-off session: it's mandatory to commit to a month, say. That could be another idea! (Sometimes your confidence rubs off on your clients and they trust the process even more.)

OMG Ash, I can’t believe that I have missed your comment and only see it now 😱 only because I opened the app on my phone to make sure the subscription is renewed… Otherwise I read your mails on my computer, mail client and not on substack. (I’ll stand in the corner in shame for the rest of the day 😳) Thank you for your advice. For the « medical » acupuncture a subscription is hard to sell because in France the security social plus the private complementary insurance reimburse for the « normal » healthcare. People are used to not pay out of their pocket without reimbursment. (as is the case with acupuncture) I have sold a couple of « 3-pack » deals to women. They are more commited to their health and wellbeing. Men expect things to work after 1-2 treatments. Then they go back to their unhealthy lifestyle and if symptoms come back as before, they’ll say that acupuncture does not work 😅

I think the subscription deal could work for cosmetic acupuncture. Strangely enough people are more willing to pay for beauty as for health… Anyway, Ash if you happen to be in my part of the world, I am happy to treat you to a session (you’ll feel super relaxed and energized, ready to walk to Lyon if needed be 😎)

First, loved this post. These always get me thinking differently. I appreciate the example about the real estate agent - which is totally genius. I recently shifted my thinking about our business model from product/retail to service provider. This has opened an entirely new landscape of revenue opportunities. Moving beyond the sales transaction is where you find sustainable income. You make a sale and someone is gone. You have to work and work and work to bring them back. It also isn’t a mindset of long term customer loyalty. If you think about providing a service, you nurture that client relationship from the start.

Perfect example: we sold a custom suit and shirt to a gentleman for his daughter’s wedding. He then sent his son to us for a suit to wear at the same wedding. Two weeks before the wedding we had an urgent call from the mother of the bride for 8 ties. We made it happen. A week before the wedding, two more ties needed. Done. Because we came through for them, we are now hired to go back and sort through the original gentleman’s closet (at his wife’s insistence) to clear out all the old, ill fitting clothes and make new ones. The profit that grew from that first transaction is 📈!!

There is a reason why car dealerships offer service and parts - and why the warranties are written to keep service with an authorized provider. A car is a long term investment so that one time transaction is limiting. Keep them in the family and suddenly you see them with regularity and eventually say “hey, I see you have 30k miles on your car, we’d love to buy it off you and get you into a new one with this great offer”.

OHHHHHHH MYYYYYYYY GOOODDDNESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! Okay, so I just left a comment on another comment of yours inquiring more about your biz (because I only know you from our discussions about moving to Europe!), but now this sheds so much more light on it. I am obsessed! How cool is this?!

Thinking two things off top of head:

1) There are definitely people with enough wealth / desire to pay you a yearly fee to manage their wardrobes and make sure their clothes fit brilliantly all the time and make them look like a million bucks wherever they go. Like a VIP clothing concierge. That's super cool, and I keep picturing you in London working with James Bond.

2) I WOULD SO BUY A CLASS ON THIS. You could even start the world's coolest membership / club for people who are into making their own custom wardrobes, but at a refined level. Not so much DIY your own dress, but more like: here's how you can make your own fitted blazer that's comparable in quality to Chanel. Ugh, would I love to be able to do that! I feel like this doesn't exist?! So much of the DIY community seems to revolve around a bohemian, artsy craftsy look. I'd love to be able to make my own "fuck-you outfits."

I immediately looked up "annual home maintenance services"! They exist. Brilliant!! Now I'm looking for one in my area. If it doesn't exist, Ima light a fire under the ass of someone in my family.

I bet they exist, but are probably performed by some dude named Vinny who runs through a mediocre checklist just to get it knocked out before he goes to lift at the gym.

We need women-led businesses like these! Women are so detail oriented and thoughtful and thorough. Plus, imagine how much more comfortable so many folks would feel hiring a woman-led business for this. The 75-year-old widow, to start!

Yes, love this! I've started doing this with brand photography because a lot of businesses get overwhelmed with trying to get EVERYTHING shot at once and need new images frequently. It's a decent investment to do a bigger production of a shoot and psychologically doing it in chunks works better for them even though it ends up being more in the end. Works for me!

I don't know if it's a true "subscription" since it's for a definitive number of shoots in a period of time vs. monthly, but inspired by the same core idea. It's easier on both of us and it guarantees work/revenue months out for me. Honestly, it's an easier sell than one big brand shoot, too.

That's SUCH a good point with your work, R! It totally is overwhelming to have to get everything ready for one big day - the pressure is real!!!

I love love love that you're doing this. In my own experience, I'd freakin' love a subscription where I'd just show up every quarter and the studio would have my brand colors / set set up already for me with fresh set looks and everything - and maybe even a wardrobe in my size - and then I just sit down and bang 'er out!

I mean, that is SUCH a big undertaking, since I've now just turned you from photographer into set designer and also wardrobe consultant, lol, but I could so see that being a siiiiiiick agency model. Holy fuck.

LOL I thought we were trying to work LESS 🤣 Really though, that would be super fun and I would just find kick-ass partners to do it with.

Trying to figure out what I can do for a book/movie club???

Expand full comment
author

I think a themed approach would work here! For example, people who are interested in moving to Italy - you then have a club all about moving to Italy where you watch all of the movies set in Italy (you can watch movies together on Discord, believe it or not!) and you read all the books pertaining to Italy, and you cook all the foods inspired by Italy, and you do the language lessons and accountability things. That would be so neat! It would give people a reason to justify the expense, since it connects with something they want (rather than just a random book club). Know what I mean?!

Expand full comment

Yes I have to do some thinking around theming as I would like to create a book/film club specifically for women horror lovers.
